The Question: Top Load or Front Load

Posted on Sunday 7 March 2010

Purchasing a washing machine is a task that should not be taken lightly. A washing machine is a major purchase that can help the owner save time and money by washing clothes at home. An energy efficient washer can also save money on utilities. Here are some things to consider when determining which washing machine to purchase.

Top Load or Front Load Washing Machine?

Top loaders are most commonly found in most homes. Top load washing machines are known as V-axis machines because the agitator turns or spins on a vertical axis. An advantage of top loading machines is that items can be placed in the machine without hunching or bending. This may be preferable for a person who has back troubles or other issues that forbid bending. They also use normal detergents. Top loaders may not be as energy efficient as front loader models.

Front loading washing machines are normally used in a commercial environment such as laundromats or dobis, but are now popular for home use. They are normally sleek and modern in style and also known as H-axis washing machines because the agitator turns on a horizontal axis. Front load machines uses less water and spins faster to remove more water from garments in comparison to the top loader machines. Hence, more water is conserved and less time is required for the drying cycle, which also saves on utilities. Prices range anywhere from $600 to $1500 or more. But over time, the costs may balance out with the savings on utility costs. The bending required to load the machine and the cost of special detergents may deter some from buying front load machines.

Another alternative is the washer dryer combo. This model generally works well for flats and smaller households, and can be space and money savers for singles or couples.

Other Things to Think About When Purchasing a Washing Machine

Always check for the energy and water efficiency ratings when buying a washing machine. Higher rating machines may cost a little more but will save you money over time. The capacity of the washer should be considered as well as the wash cycles for various fabrics. Finally, the washing machine should meet the needs and preferences of the person who will use it most.
