London Mayor Gives Qualified Backing to Battersea Power Station Project

Posted on Monday 8 February 2010

The plans for the development of the largely abandoned Battersea Power Station have evoked a mixed response from London Mayor Boris Johnson.

The objective of the £5.5 billion proposal is to develop new flats, offices and shops around the riverside Wandsworth location. The plan calls for 150,000 sq m of office space, 46,500 sq m of retail space and construction of 3,700 homes.

Johnson wants the plan, which was originally submitted for review and approval late last year, to be developed into a master plan in a way that would profit not only London but also the councils of the Lambeth and Wandsworth.

Even as he said the plan did not confirm to the London Plan, Johnson praised the developers for proposed buildings calling their design and layout a great style of architectural planning since they maintained a balance between the new structures and the heritage building of the power station.

However, Johnson was also quick to point out some aspects he found wanting in the scheme. He asked the developers to give more details about the parking and transport facilities that would be available at the deskspace site. He also called for more insight into the retail opportunities offered at the redeveloped location.

Johnson expressed satisfaction over the plans he had seen and said the restoration of the area needed utmost care since it was one of the most important historical landmarks in the city of London.
