An Introduction to E-commerce and Website Templates

Posted on Tuesday 24 November 2009

We purchase many wares off-the-peg and don’t expect them to be custom-built to match our requirements. Nonetheless, websites seem to be a different issue altogether. Most enterprises expect that their site will be produced to their exact specs. This is absolutely natural of course, and in many business plans it’s unavoidable.

But wait a second - is it truly the best way to go about things for all cases? Take e-commerce websites as an example : feature-rich websites, with demanding security prerequisites, a control panel so the website owner can update the content on the site. All of this, while demanding the website to be painless to use and purchase items for shoppers. Serving all those demands is no frivolous chore, and if one thing goes wrong, you have to go back to the web designer to ask for fixes. Tailor-made websites in this light have a large weight to carry.

However, there’s an alternative to this method which is a lot more cost-effective, potentially gives you a lot more features, and offers more stability, reliability and security - e-commerce templates.

People understand now that custom-made websites frequently aren’t essential and that in many situations, it’s better to amend your goals even ever-so slightly so they match a solid, popular and proven website template than to gamble with a bespoke website design to match your business plan. But why is this? Because of the complexity a modern website asks for. You want a solid, well-tested codebase that powers your site, not recently written code that hasn’t had the benefit of months and years of real-life testing. Not only that, but templates ordinarily come with free updates, so your website is keeping up with all the contemporary technologies showing your latest tweets online.

But perhaps most compellingly, website templates are a lot more cheaper than custom sites. Why drop £4000 on a website when you can get one with more facilities for only £250, for example?

The above reasons ought to make you think twice about your business plan and whether to select a tailored website or a templated one.
