Be True

Posted on Friday 21 November 2008

The concept of “being true to myself” seemed foreign to me for most of my life. I would listen to others instead of myself; or I would listen to my doubt instead of my intuition. That’s probably why I kept receiving the same messages over and over again. When I finally started to live in integrity and follow my heart, an amazing shift took place. Now my “self” almost demands that I live true to my values.

In trying to be true to ourselves, we often make some unusual (and unpopular) decisions. They feel good to us but, at times, may be not quite politically correct. We proceed with the decision but then the doubt pops into our head. Did I make the right decision? What will they think of me?

Doubt can play very silly games with us. Even though, at times, we need to pay attention to its nagging feeling - other times it can destroy our hard earned effort to “be true”. If you go to all the hard work of thinking out a decision, listening to your intuition, and logic - then you also have to trust that process and not let doubt (or what others think) ruin your accomplishment of being true.

It’s like they say about prayer: If there is a decision to be made and you pray and pray and pray about it, eventually you must go with the trust that WHATEVER decision you make - will be the right one. You must trust and not second-guess yourself. Boy, what a tough assignment!

Doubt, others’ opinions, and second-guessing can cause more stress and anxiety then making the original decision. Follow your instincts to block out the doubt and trust in the decisions that you make. You will end up seeing validations that you did the right thing. It will be further confirmation that if you are true to yourself the universe will support you!

Choosing the Right Flooring

Posted on Friday 21 November 2008

There are various things which need to be taken into consideration when deciding what kind of

href="http://www.yourfloors.co.uk">flooring to get fitted. Getting new flooring fitted in your

home can breathe new life into it and can be a great way to improve your living environment. It may

not be as expensive as you think either.

A big consideration on what flooring to choose is the function of the room it will go in. Flooring

which makes sense for the dining room may not be suitable for the kitchen or bathroom for example.

Some of the most popular types of flooring are carpet, vinyl, wood, and laminate.

Laminate flooring can be a great substitute for solid wood floors if you are looking to achieve a

wood effect floor for a fraction of the price. Laminate flooring consists of a sheet of MDF with a

wood-effect plastic surface glued to it. One pitfall of laminate flooring is that whilst it is

scratch resistant once it is damaged it is not possible to repair. That aside it can still be an

ideal choice for a kitchen, where the plastic coating provides an easy to wipe clean surface. On the

other hand a solid wood flooring would not be appropriate in a bathroom, or indeed any room which is

likely to get very wet. Some woods are particularly sensitive to moisture such as beech.

If you are looking to fit a wooden floor, its critical you have the right surface to fit it on. An

ideal surface would be flat, and dry. There are options however to counter uneven flooring issues,

such as laying ply throughout, or employing an underlay to create a floating floor.

More often than not laminate flooring is sold as a product you can assemble yourself which is

another useful way of keeping costs to a minimum. Solid wood flooring requires however a higher

degree of DIY competence, so it can sometimes be advisable to get solid wooden floors fitted

professionally which on the downside can add substantially to the cost.

Something many people do not realise when they measure their room to calculate how much flooring

they will need to buy ” is that it is important to include a 10mm gap around the edge of the room

for the wooden flooring to expand and contract.

As a fundamental part of any interior design strategy, it is crucial to select the correct flooring.

Whilst wooden or laminate floors can be ideal ” often for a more chic minimalist look; carpet can be

a better option if you are trying to achieve a more traditional home feel. The important thing is

you take into account the various factors you need to consider before ordering new flooring.

The Honeybush Miracle

Posted on Friday 21 November 2008

Perhaps a little eclipsed by the world-wide success of Rooibos, another natural South African health tea, Honeybush; is finally getting the attention it deserves.

Honeybush tea ( botanical name: Cyclopia intermedia ) grows along mountain slopes in the Cedarberg and Langkloof area, and has a naturally sweet, almost honey-like taste. Its brewing colour is a pinky red. South Africa produces only 200 tons of Honeybush tea per year. Not much when compared to the annual Rooibos tea crop of around 4000 tons. This lesser known tea has, however, apparently plenty to offer.

Just like the ever popular Rooibos tea, the tannin content of Honeybush tea is very low; and also contains no caffeine at all. Good news for would-be slimmers is that this inexpensive and readily available tea is reported to stave off hunger pangs and reduce water retention.

Scientific analysis of your typical cup of Honeybush reveals an impressive range of minerals needed for good health; such as Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium, Sodium, Zinc, Manganese, Iron, Aluminium, and Boron. Honeybush apparently also contains anti-oxidants; those free-radical fighters which slow the ageing process of the body’s cells. Recent scientific studies on Honeybush are not extensive enough to make any far- reaching medical claims; however, Honeybush tea is believed to have anti-carcinogenic ( cancer-fighting ), anti-fungal, antispasmodic and anti-depressant properties. Not a bad track record for an unassuming little bush growing wild in mountains and valleys of the Western and Southern Cape !

Honeybush tea is brewed for the perfect cuppa as you would any other tea; although you’re advised to let Honeybush infuse a little longer than usual. Honeybush ( like Rooibos ) actually improves in flavour the longer you allow it to brew. Honeybush may also be brewed on the stove in teapot and left to simmer without becoming bitter. Strong Honeybush tea is also useful as a base for sauces and marinades; and enhances natural flavours when added to any vegetable stew or casserole.

Several health-promoting properties have been associated with drinking Rooibos tea and to a lesser extent Honeybush tea, e.g. as treatment for colic infants, as aid for allergies and various sleep and digestive disorders. Research shows it may alleviate menopausal symptoms in women, prevent cancerous tumours, repair sun damage, aid digestion, even stimulate milk production in nursing mothers.

Scientists have shown that cancer development is a multi-step process, and that damage to human genetic material (DNA) is likely to be a major cause of cancer; as well as other chronic diseases. Both Rooibos and Honeybush teas have been shown (in studies done at PROMEC Unit of MRC South Africa) to prevent DNA damage. The teas showed protective effects against detoxifying enzymes.

It’s time for Honeybush tea to get it’s fair share of the limelight; and with so many health conscious tea lovers adding it their shopping lists; it’s all set to go!

Why?

Direct Answers - Column for the week of November 1, 2004

I met Sean a year and a half ago in a crowd of 50,000 people. We struck up a conversation and really hit it off. He gave me his number, which I forgot. I thought about tracking him down, but figured if it was meant to be we would meet again. Three weeks later I got a phone call from him, and we have been together ever since, until about a month ago.

I left my friends and my life that I was used to. Everything was fantastic, we were in love, we thought we were going to get married. We just mentioned it a few times, but it wasn’t really a topic of conversation. Anyway, something changed in Sean two months ago.

He didn’t cheat that I know of, but in a week’s time he broke up with me, demoted himself from a high ranked position at his job, and became depressed. He went to the doctor and is doing better now, but I am confused. How can everything be so great and all of a sudden he changes his mind about everything in his life?

He still likes to have sex and hang out with me sometimes, but doesn’t have any interest in getting back together. I need to stop showing interest in him, I think, and get on with my life, but I am having a hard time doing this. Why is he acting this way, and is there any way we will be together again?

Jessica

Jessica, most people never find out the true why behind another’s actions. Everyone wants the imaginary “closure,” but the closure they want is to have what they want. That is why almost no one gets closure.

As a psychological concept, closure doesn’t work. When a relationship ends, people don’t want to learn why, they want to learn why not. They want to fix it. But if a man used a woman for sex, how will learning the truth give her closure? If a woman never loved the man, how can that truth give him closure?

You are not in a relationship with Sean, but he is having sex with you. He sounds like somebody with a plan for himself. Friendship sex is not in your best interest. You need to stop having sex with him and move on. Asking why only traps you.

Wayne & Tamara

Winnowing

I am a female, 19. I am more mature than my age, and sometimes I feel I am trapped with an old soul in a young body. I fell in love with a man, 38. We were in a long-distance relationship for six months, but two months ago we decided I would move to New York to be with him and build my life there.

We had a bad time. I couldn’t find myself, and he was occupied with his business. I was very unhappy and we argued constantly. Now I am back in Israel, and he is there. He decided it would be easier for me to build my life here, and it would be good for us to take a break. He is afraid I might regret marrying him because I haven’t experienced life yet.

Is this kind of relationship possible, or am I holding on to something which is doomed from the start?

Leah

Leah, why do you need to mention age difference or other factors? When you were with him in New York, you were unhappy and argued constantly. Why can’t that be the truth of the matter? You gave it a try, it didn’t work, he pulled away.

Every man is not your future husband. Most men you will date until you see the relationship isn’t going anywhere. That’s what dating is all about–not snaring a man, but separating the wheat from the chaff. He’s chaff. You’re looking for wheat. Keep sifting.

Posted on Tuesday 18 November 2008

You’ve done everything right this time. You’re eating lots of salad, fruit, and protein; using only low fat dressings and even staying away from white flour and refined sugar.

But then…you have an argument with your spouse. You are bored, stressed, depressed and giving up. You walk by the pantry and see nothing that will satisfy the sudden urge for sugar, salt, potato chips, candy, or whatever your particular poison of choice. So you go down to the grocery store and find what you need, go home and pig out! Maybe you don’t need to go to the store…maybe you’ve thought ahead because you knew this moment would come and you have a secret cabinet with all kinds of binge eating goodies!.

Ok, well that might be a little dramatic. But most people have found themselves following a good, healthy diet and all of a sudden, because of some emotional upheaval, they’ve found themselves in the middle of an overeating binge. It can really blow your whole healthy eating plan. So what’s happening when you find yourself in this situation? And how can you stop emotional eating?

First of all, when you go on an emotional eating binge, strong emotions are causing you to experience stress. This is when your body goes into “fight or flight” response. You either “fight”or you “fly”. All your energy is directed towards one of these responses. Cortisol is released and normally, this causes the energy exerted in fighting or flying ito be replaced with an increase in appetite. You are supposed to eat to replace the energy burned.

However, in modern-day times, we are unable to follow through with the “fight or flight” response. Everything happens as it is designed to happen, except that instead of energy being burned, it is “stuffed” and we are left with an urge to eat.

So what can you do to stop emotional eating? I have found a very helpful book, “Lose It For Life” written by Stephen Arterburn and Dr. Linda Mintle, who suggest making a list of alternate activities when you find yourself in such a situation, such as taking a walk, take three deep breaths or call a friend. One other very effective way to battle these urges is to pray. As a Christian, I find the strength I need to deal with my weakness is found in God.

Sometimes we turn to food out of loneliness or boredom. The same technique could apply. Talking to your friend or playing with your dog could be infinitely more interesting than stuffing your face with a cookie.

The Current Terrific World of DVD Players

Posted on Tuesday 18 November 2008

DVD recorders can be used with a digital telly to tape your much-loved channels and films as well as to look at pre-recorded comedies programs. Incredible picture and audio quality, nevertheless the recording facility makes them significantly dearer than players and besides they can also be harder to operate than Video Cassette Recorders. The choice of recordable configurations available presently may well also add to the shoppers’ confusion.

Having the correct connections linking your Digital Versatile Disc recorder & your telly and personal hi-fi can without doubt make an extensive difference to the overall quality of the sound & picture.

These are the DVD connections to consider:

S-video connection: This is the next best thing to component video & is a choice for all DVD Players that don’t encompass component output and TVs that do not encompass component input. You may possibly will require another cable however the picture difference should be without a doubt worthwhile.

SCART leads: A major form of DVD connection found in the United Kingdom manufactured goods is the SCART lead. This holds both audio & image signals. SCART connections are generally seen on Digital Versatile Disc players plus televisions. Gold protected SCART leads supply a significantly enhanced connection. A SCART connection will absolutely give you a better image than S-Video can & is near to component benchmark. SCART cables aren’t as a rule of thumb incorporated with players. You will be expected to shell out about twenty-five pounds Compare, Review and Buy Cheap Sony DVD Recorders at Sound & Vision.

Audio connectors: DVD recorders, mainly the more top notch makes, can have scores of audio outputs. Outputs are expected to contain phono, digital coaxial and digital optical. If you are attempting to connect to a different hi fi player this may perhaps be a considerably mainly trait.

Progressive scan is the most up-to-date buzzword in the DVD recorder industry & while more luxurious recorders incorporate it, it can not as a matter of fact be used unless on the other hand you have a digital TV. With it your image can be refreshed sixty times 60 p/s therefore helping to make a sharper, more or less flicker less image & is better to anything made available by the various interlaced scanning items.

How the Food Industry Influences Nutrition and Health

Safe Food: Bacteria, Biotechnology and Bioterrorism (2003), both from the
University of California Press

When was the last time you consumed soda? Most likely, it wasn’t that long ago. You may even drink several cans or bottles each day. In the U.S, carbonated soft drinks are a huge business. Every year, they generate more than $50 billion in annual sales.
Two companies - Coca-Cola and PepsiCo — dominate the soda market. They are in a constant battle for the market share of the product - a conflict known as the “Cola War.” Hundreds of millions of dollars are spent annually for advertising. Not surprisingly, the companies are always looking for new markets. And, increasingly, they are directing their attention to adolescents and children.
For decades, schools have allowed soda to be sold in on-site vending machines. So, generating income for schools from the sale of soda is not a new policy. However, in the early 1990s, pouring-rights contracts emerged. These put a different spin on the sale of soda in schools. And, over the years, they have increasingly gained in popularity.
In return for the exclusive sale of one-company’s product, pouring-rights contracts give school districts large lump-sum payments and extra payments and/or gifts over a period of five or 10 years. The contracts provide additional incentives for consumption levels that surpass quotas. So, they tend to encourage the consumption of higher amounts of soda, even by the youngest students. In one of the most extravagant contracts, a 53-school district in Colorado, gave up its Pepsi vending machines and signed an $8 million, 10 year agreement with Coca-Cola that included cash bonuses when sale targets were exceeded and a new car for a senior with high grades and perfect attendance. But, even the smaller contracts tend to be generous. The goal is to create brand loyalty among young people - a loyalty that could continue throughout their lives. Without a doubt, administrators in cash-strapped school districts have a litany of reasons to be enticed. But, adherence to the contracts may be taken to extremes. For example, a Georgia student was suspended when he wore a shirt with a Pepsi logo to a student government-sponsored “Coke Day” rally.
So what is contained in a typical soda that may be found in a school vending machine? A 20-ounce screw-top plastic bottle of soda has 275 calories. While there are other ingredients such as flavorings and caffeine, the soda is primarily sugar and carbonated water. High in calories and zero in nutritional value, it is the quintessential “junk food.” The Center for Science in the Public Interest refers to soft drinks as “liquid candy.” Since the bottles have screw-tops, the liquid may be sipped throughout the day, thereby bathing the teeth with sugar and upsetting dentists. While it is unclear how many sodas a typical student might drink in one day, one is not a bad guess. Just one a day means 1925 empty calories per week. Heavy users drink more than one soda per day. Children who begin drinking soda when they are still young tend to increase the amount they consume through adolescence into young adulthood. Many children drink more soda than juice or milk. While juice and whole milk contain about the same amount of calories as soda, they contain useful vitamins and minerals. Juice and milk are far better nutritional options.
Although the relationship cannot be proven conclusively, soda consumption correlates with obesity. Children who drink sodas take in more calories, are fatter and have worse diets than those who don’t. If you need to lose weight, start by replacing sodas with water, fat free or 1% milk, or 100% juice (but not too much).

Watch What You Say!

Posted on Monday 17 November 2008

Everything you say has an impact on others.

I’ll never forget the time I was walking through the waiting room where I worked; there was a patient sitting there, looking very unhappy. So I smiled at her as I walked by. On my way back through the waiting room 15 minutes later, she said to me, “thank you for that smile. It brightened my day.” A simple little thing, almost unconscious on my part, and yet it meant so much to her.

That was almost 10 years ago, and I remember it like it was yesterday. That smile changed both of us; it had a positive impact on her, and her reaction had a major impact on me. It made me realize how much we affect each other as we move through our individual lives. And most of the time we’re totally unaware of it.

During an especially difficult time in my life I was attending a professional meeting, and my supervisor stated to the group that I had a “hardwiring problem.” I felt embarrassed, chagrined, and aghast that she felt that way and would say it in front of other people, who were then drawing erroneous conclusions about who I was! For years afterward, any time I had difficulty grasping a concept, I would flashback to her saying that about me, and I’d think that maybe it was true. Maybe I wasn’t like others, maybe I just didn’t “get it.”

Words are very powerful. They can affect you long after they’ve been said. They can change the way you see yourself. Words can be bullets or shelters, rocks or loving arms.

“I hate you.” “I’ll take care of it for you.” “You are so stupid.” “You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me.” These are simple statements, but each is full of potentially life-changing meaning. You only need to put yourself in the shoes of the listener to know how these words could impact your life.

Just think, these kinds of things are spoken every second. With every syllable that comes out of your mouth, you literally have the power to greatly enhance another person’s self-perception, or destroy it.

Some people are seemingly oblivious to the power of their words. They spout and spew, apparently never stopping to consider what those words are doing to the listener. They feel justified in “telling it like it is.” I doubt that we are ever justified in purposely and thoughtlessly causing harm to another with what we say to them.

The absence of words can also have an affect. When someone does not reply to something you’ve said or asked, it is impossible to know what that lack of reply is really saying. Do they just consider what you’ve said to be totally unimportant? Are they too busy to reply?
When I was just starting out in my business, I emailed someone who had the same type of business and asked her questions about how she got started, and what was helpful for her in getting clients. I never did hear back from her. That made me think that she just didn’t want to bother with a “newbie.” She’d had the opportunity to help someone else, and possibly to further her own career by generating referrals, just by being helpful. But her lack of response made me decide that she was not someone I would recommend to others.

Be careful what you say. Think about the impact your words will have. Words change people’s lives.
